REUNA releases the KAWAX report, which recommends developing connectivity, software development, grid infrastructure, human capital, IVOA membership and data policy for supporting astronomical research in Chile. The document also coins the name ChiVO for the recommended Chilean Virtual Observatory.

The idea of mounting a Chilean Virtual Observatory get funded by the FONDEF program, which foster applied research in the country. Five Universities (UTFSM, UChile, PUC, UConce and USACH) and two Institutions (REUNA and ALMA) start working on developing the capacities and know-how to build the first prototypes of ChiVO.

ChiVO gets accepted by the International Virtual Observatory Alliance.
